While drivers are more aware of motorcyclists today, than they have been in the past, accidents still occur all too often. For example, in 2015, there were 35,092 reported fatal motorcycle accidents, which represents an increase of 7.2 percent from 2014 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Does Missouri Need a Law Outlawing Distracted Driving?

The state of Missouri is in the minority when it comes to a ban on texting and driving. In fact, it is one of only six states that have not put some type of law in place. Many lawmakers and people on the road wonder if this lack of action has led to an increase in distracted driving accidents in the state and if lawmakers need to take action to crack down harder on this problem that is only growing throughout the nation. Distracted Driving: A Serious Issue in School Zones

In the state of Kansas (along with the majority of other states in the U.S.), officers have the ability to deter distracted drivers by issuing citations to anyone who is texting or reading emails while behind the wheel. However, police officers in Missouri do not have the same ability to do this. To date, Missouri doesn’t have laws in place that make the act of texting and driving illegal for everyone on the road. While it is illegal for anyone 21 or younger or driving a commercial vehicle with passengers to do so, that’s as far as the law goes. (more…)
