There is no doubt that distracted driving is dangerous. Those that are behind the wheel while talking on the phone, talking to passengers or engaging in behaviors that take their eyes off the road put everyone at risk – including themselves. Unfortunately, most drivers assume that texting or talking on the phone are the only forms of distracted driving. While these are the most common, there are several other dangerous (if not deadly) forms of distracted driving that all drivers should avoid.

The Most Dangerous Distractions

There are many other distractions that take a person’s eyes from the road. All it takes is a few seconds for a vehicle to veer out of their lane or even strike another vehicle or pedestrian.

Just some of the most dangerous distractions include:

  • Smoking-Related Distractions – Individuals who smoke in their car are unknowingly engaging in distracted driving behaviors. While it may not be against the law, lighting a cigarette, putting it out or even smoking it takes physical and cognitive abilities away from the task of driving.
  • Pets Moving in the Car – Driving with pets are something most owners will do. But, a pet that is moving around in the car is a serious distraction for the driver. Whether it is a dog or cat, these moving objects force the driver to pay attention to what is going on in the car rather than what is going on in front of them. To avoid this, pets should be buckled into the back of the vehicle or placed in a carrying/travel case.
  • Using Electronic Devices That are Part of the Vehicle – Devices, such as OEM navigation systems or the radio can also take a driver’s focus away from the road. All it takes is a glance at the screen to change the station or input an address while driving to cause an accident.
  • Adjusting Climate Controls – Most climate controls are not accessible by the steering wheel; therefore, the driver must take their focus from the road and look to their vehicle’s climate system to make adjustments. The brief second away from the road can lead to fatal mistakes.
  • Eating Food or Drinking – Most individuals find themselves eating at least one meal in the car – especially if they have a long commute. While you may assume you are saving yourself valuable time by eating on the road, drinking and eating take away several key abilities that you need to drive safely. Instead, pull over and eat your meal. If you have to eat in the car, avoid actual meals – instead, stick to a small snack that does not require you to look down or take your hands from the wheel in order to hold it.
  • Talking to Individuals in the Car – A large majority of distracted driving accidents are caused by drivers who are talking to passengers in the vehicle. While this is more common among novice drivers, it is still a concern for even experienced drivers.
  • Event Outside of the Car – Gawking at drama happening outside of the car is a common distraction for drivers – whether it is another accident, or a crowd or festival just off the street. Teens are especially prone to taking their eyes off the road to look at events outside of their car.
