Why Having Auto Insurance is Important

Car insurance may come with high premiums and be a hassle to obtain in the first place, but no one ever argues about the value of insurance. You may never use your auto insurance, but you still have the peace of mind knowing that, if something happens, it will be there to cover the cost. If you feel that you do not need auto insurance, you may want to consider the ramifications of failing to insure your vehicle.

In an accident, insurance is what helps settle property damage, but it can also help in a personal injury case. For example, Horn Law was able to obtain a six-figure car accident settlement for one of our clients who was seriously injured in a car accident. Had the other party been uninsured, our client may not have received compensation – and if our client was uninsured, then he or she would have had no options for recourse, in terms of using his or her own uninsured motorist coverage.

If that is not reason enough, here are a few more good reasons to consider insurance.

Top Reasons to Insure Your Vehicle

  1. It is the law. If having coverage is not reason enough, then perhaps the law may be enough to persuade you. It is illegal in Kansas City, as in most cities throughout the country, to drive without liability insurance policy, at least. You could face criminal fines, and even lose your driver’s license, if you are a repeat offender.
  2. Your vehicle is an asset that needs protection. Cars are not cheap, and if that vehicle is damaged in an accident, you do not want to have to pay to replace or repair it out of your own pocket. Your vehicle is, after all, the second most important (and costly) purchase that you will make – the first being your home.
  3. Your lender will require insurance. If you are financing your vehicle, you will be required to insure the vehicle. Most lenders require insurance, and will have their own set minimums for acceptable insurance policies. Refer to the terms of your loan, to make sure that you are adequately insured.
  4. Your insurance offers legal protection. There is nothing to stop someone from pursuing a claim against you, if you injure him or her in an accident. Your insurance, however, serves as a buffer in these situations. Instead of you paying from your own pocket for the other party’s injuries, your insurance company will do so – potentially saving you hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  5. Protection from the unexpected. Bottom line: No one can predict the weather, or actions of other drivers. Every day that you start your vehicle, you are at-risk for an accident. Insurance offers you protection against those unforeseen events.
