Douglas R. Horn attended the Federalist Society’s National Lawyers Convention in Washington D.C. on November 12-14. The gathering brought together a leading group of attorneys, judges, elected officials, and business leaders to discuss the role of Congress.
The picture at left shows Horn at the convention with his daughter Mary Horn. Mary, who is attending George Washington University in Washington D.C., was able to attend several of the lectures and meetings.
The Federalist Society was founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom through the mandate of the U.S. Constitution. The 2015 national convention was focused on an examination of the U.S. Congress and included panels, lectures, and other meetings that served as a platform for discussing the restoration of a “constitutional Congress.”
In this regard, Horn believes the present day Congress is charting off course from the original intent of Article I of the U.S. Constitution. Horn joins many members in the Federalist Society who are advocating for congressional reforms, including the following.
- Remove the concentration of power away from the federal government, including the legislative functions of Congress, and return many governmental powers to the states and local governments.
- Congress should retrieve the taxing, spending, and borrowing powers that it has delegated to executive agencies.
- Congress should retake their lawmaking powers that have been handed off to the regulatory agencies.
Horn is anxious to continue his participation in the Federalist Society and hopes the membership will be able to make a significant impact on matters of national importance. Horn concluded his time in Washington stating, “The liberties and freedoms we possess as American citizens are very special, to retain them we must fight for their preservation in every public forum.”
