Residents of Rural Missouri at Greater Risk of Death due to Injury

According to new research, residents of rural areas are at a much higher risk of dying from injury, compared to residents of urban areas.  This is in spite of the fact that there may be more numbers of accidents ending with injuries in urban areas.

The research which was published recently in the journal Annals of Emergency Medicine, focused on injury-related fatality.  These injuries occurred not just as a result of vehicle accidents, which were the main cause of injuries across the country, but also injuries caused by gun violence and poisoning.

The researchers found that injuries caused more deaths every year than any other cause.  For instance, nationwide, the number of injury-related fatalities was more than 15 times higher than the toll from murder.

Out of these injuries, traffic accidents accounted for the highest fatality numbers.  In fact according to the data, traffic accident injuries ended in fatalities at a rate that was 1.4 times greater than the next leading cause of fatality from injury.  However, in rural areas, the rate of fatalities in traffic accidents was as much as two times higher than the next leading cause of fatality from injury.  People in rural areas were twice as likely to die from accident-related injuries, compared to residents of the largest cities.

What that means is that if you are involved in an accident in rural Missouri, your chances of being killed are as much as twice as high as someone injured in an accident on an urban road.

Urban areas see more numbers of accidents every year, and no doubt see more incidents of gun violence as well.  However, the risk of dying from these injuries is much higher in rural areas.
